Jaguar TCS Racing: Leading the Charge in Formula E Innovation
In 2016 Jaguar became the first premium manufacturer to join the all-electric ABB FIA Formula E Championship street racing series, carving a path for a sustainable future in motorsport. Formula E is a real-world test bed for Jaguar’s electric technology development, bringing the goal of becoming an all-electric luxury brand by 2025 that much closer to reality.
After the exciting launch of the Formula E team in 2016, expectations ran high, and the challenge was mounted to become a front-running team. Despite many issues in the early development years, it was the 2020/2021 season that changed everything for the Jaguar TCS Racing team. Our very own Kiwi driver, Mitch Evans, proved to be a formidable force on the racetrack, showcasing his exceptional driving skills and determination to place an incredible fourth place in the drivers’ championship. He was consistently one of the series’ top performers, racking up five podium finishes and a total of 90 points throughout the season. Mitch’s team-mate Sam Bird also helped to seal the deal for the Jaguar team with an incredible year-long performance, rounding up the year with 177 points to take home second place in the Constructors Championship.
The impressive on-track performance was undoubtedly aided by the incredible engineering and technological prowess of Jaguar TCS Racing, one of the few teams in Formula E to design and manufacture their own powertrain. From the motor to the transmission, inverter and rear suspension, every element of the Jaguar TCS Racing powertrain is meticulously crafted and tested to ensure maximum performance on the racetrack. This level of innovation and ingenuity has set Jaguar TCS Racing apart from its competitors, allowing them to achieve historical success in electric racing. With its cutting-edge technology and top-tier talent, Jaguar TCS Racing is poised to continue its competitive run around the Formula E circuit for many seasons to come.
More on Formula E
Formula E is unique in its focus on electric vehicle technology and sustainability, as well as its strict rules and regulations. In an effort to control costs, championship teams must comply and use regulated components such as batteries and carbon fibre chassis. The regulations allow teams to focus on developing efficient and lightweight powertrains that will ultimately improve the performance and range of future Jaguar Land Rover electric vehicles. Each team has two race cars, one per driver, used for the entire race distance of 45 minutes plus one lap.
