Jaguar Land Rover have just unveiled a new concept demonstrator vehicle that showcases the company’s latest innovations in circular design, low-carbon engineering, and next-generation materials.

Known as the Cornerstone project, the demonstrator vehicle represents a collaboration between Jaguar Land Rover’s engineering and industrial operation teams and more than 40 suppliers across its global chain to develop new, more sustainable automotive components using recycled, bio-based, and low-impact materials, while designing components with improved repairability and recyclability in mind.

The Circular Economy

Circular Design

Circular Design is a regenerative framework that eliminates waste and pollution by keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible. Instead of the linear take -> make -> dispose model, it focuses on durability, easy repair, modularity, and recycling.

The concept of circular design stems from the idea for a Circular Economy that is pioneered by organisations like the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Environmental Benefits for Now and the Future

So far, the project has delivered significant environmental benefits, saving more than one tonne of CO₂e (carbon dioxide equivalent) compared with current materials and processes, while increasing recycled material use by almost 140kg.

By creating components for a real vehicle bodyshell, Jaguar Land Rover is helping to pave the way for future production models. Innovations already planned for upcoming vehicles include advanced headlamp technology, lower-emission steel, recycled door glass, recycled seat foam, and new FlexAir seat technology.

The project has also achieved several industry firsts, including 100% closed-loop recycled door glass, delivering a 36% reduction in CO₂e emissions, alongside repairable headlamp electronics, and speakers featuring 95% recycled magnets.

Jaguar Land Rover’s Circularity Lab

All of these developments build on the work of Jaguar Land Rover’s Circularity Lab, which explores ways to extend the lifecycles of vehicles by improving how components can be reused, repaired, and recycled.

Reimagining Automotive Design

Jaguar Land Rover is also collaborating through the Global Impact Coalition’s Automotive Plastics Circularity Project, addressing one of the automotive industry’s biggest challenges: recovering and reusing plastics found throughout vehicles, from interiors to exterior components.
