What is Audi TFSI?

Audi TFSI stands for Turbo Fuel Stratified Injection and is a petrol engine technology that blends the best elements of direct fuel injection technology with turbocharging. This unique Audi powertrain was the first turbocharged direct injection engine on the market when it was first introduced in the A3 back in 2004.

Turbocharging is a process wherein the exhaust gasses are used to drive a turbine, which in turn compresses the incoming air before it enters the combustion chamber. The process of increasing the density of the air/fuel mixture enhances the vehicle’s power output.

Meanwhile, Fuel Stratified Injection is a direct fuel injection technology that precisely delivers fuel into the combustion chamber, allowing for greater control over the fuel/air mixture.

These work in conjunction to improve the compression ratio within the cylinder, so that every single Audi TFSI engine extracts more performance out of every single drop of fuel. This increased compression ratio leads to better efficiency, thanks to the combination of these two advanced engine technologies.

The benefits of Audi TFSI engines

This unique Audi powertrain blends all the best elements of direct injection and turbocharging to create the highest level of power output, whilst also maximising fuel efficiency simultaneously. Advantages of TFSI engines include:

  • Increased power and torque, offering impressive performance and exhilarating Audi driving experiences
  • Greater fuel efficiency – ensuring power doesn’t come at the expense of excessive fuel consumption
  • Reduced emissions – thanks to the precise control over Audi’s TFSI engines fuel is utilised carefully, with engines extracting everything out of every drop of fuel

TFSI technology also leads to better heat management of the engine’s combustion chamber, contributing to long-term durability.

What is Audi TDI?

Similar to TFSI, Audi TDI stands for Turbocharged Direct Injection, representing Audi’s diesel technology. Similar to TFSI, TDI engines incorporate turbocharging and direct injection technology. Essentially, TFSI and TDI are the same technology, the only difference is that one is petrol and one is diesel.

The benefits of Audi TDI engines

TDI engines boast many of the same benefits as the TFSI engines, such as:

  • Superior torque and efficiency – TDI engines generate high torque and low revs, making them fantastic for long trips
  • Greater fuel efficiency – helping to contribute to longer driving ranges
  • Renowned for their robustness and longevity
