Understanding Real-World Electric Range with Volvo
As electric vehicles such as the Volvo EX30, EX90, and the soon-to-arrive EX60 become increasingly popular, they are starting to feel less like something from a sci-fi film and more like an everyday reality. With this shift comes the importance of understanding how these vehicles work, their capabilities, and the practical considerations of EV ownership. One of the most important factors is their driving range.
Fortunately, Volvo Cars has developed its own Range Calculator. Designed specifically for Volvo Cars, the tool allows you to explore estimated driving ranges across a variety of real-world scenarios, helping you better understand how far you can travel.

Feeling Electric
When it comes to electric cars, certified range figures are often the starting point. It the figure that appears in headlines and configurators, measured under standardised test cycles such as WLTP (most regions), CLTC (China), and the EPA range (US and Canada).
But as many EV drivers know, range isn’t just a number. It depends on how and where you drive.
Temperature, speed, road conditions, and even climate settings all influence how far an electric car can go. The challenge is helping drivers understand what that means in practice, without overcomplicating things.
The Range Calculator
Available on the Volvo Cars websites, the Range Calculator translates certified range into an easy-to-understand estimate based on real-world scenarios. By adjusting factors like outside temperature, driving mix, and climate use, drivers can see how range changes depending on their conditions.
“The certified range number is valid and very important. What we’re doing is adding context, so customer expectations can match the reality of various scenarios from the start.” – Ray Ogink, technical leader in the team behind the Range Calculator.
Certified Versus Real-World
Certified range is measured under standardised controlled conditions: a set driving cycle in a lab, with climate control turned off, no wind, and a pleasant temperature. It’s built to provide a consistent baseline for fairness and comparison, and it’s the same standardised set-up for every car maker.
Real-life driving can, of course, look different.
“It might be winter. You might be driving faster, carrying passengers, or using the climate system more. All of that affects energy consumption, because physics is physics. It’s no different than the efficiency and range of an ICE car being impacted by the driving conditions.” – Roy Ogink.
Built on Volvo Data
Rather than leaving drivers to interpret that difference themselves, we created the Range Calculator to offer a clearer, data-driven approximation. Adjust temperature, road mix, and climate settings, and you can see how the estimated range changes.
“The idea is to help consumers become more aware of the different factors that impact range and not only focus on one single number, so they can drive with more confidence.” – Roy Ogink.
Under the hood, the calculator is based on detailed simulations developed by Volvo Cars’ engineering teams and verified against real car data. It mirrors how the car behaves in different driving environments, using the same foundations as our energy efficiency work during car development.

Clarity Builds Confidence
As electric cars become more mainstream, understanding how they perform in daily use is key to a better ownership experience. Tools like Range Calculator help build awareness, and at the same time, we’re continuously working to improve real-world range and efficiency.
The new EX60 is an example of that. It’s built on our latest SPA3 platform, which uses a smart thermal system to efficiently heat or cool both the cabin and the battery when needed. Like all our electric cars, the powertrain is also tuned to perform well not just in certification tests, but in everyday driving.
And by analysing data from real-world driving, we can better understand how people actually use their cars, helping us focus improvements where they matter most.
