The Porsche Cayenne GTS: A Surprising Thrill in the SUV World

Opinion: Archibalds Photographer, Jack Morgan, gives his take on experiencing the Cayenne GTS.

When I first got behind the wheel of the new Porsche Cayenne GTS, I expected luxury, comfort, and cutting-edge technology—all Porsche hallmarks. However, what I didn’t anticipate was how exhilarating the drive would be. In an era where electric and quieter engines tend to dominate, the V8 roar of the Cayenne GTS was a thrilling throwback. The car doesn’t just move; it connects with you, delivering an undeniable rush with every acceleration and those addictive crackles and pops upon downshifting. It’s a nostalgic reminder of the sheer joy of driving, enhanced by today’s sophisticated technology.

As someone who frequently explores the nuances of automotive excellence, I’ve noticed what truly resonates with enthusiasts. The Cayenne GTS isn’t just for Porsche aficionados; it appeals to anyone seeking an SUV that promises both genuine driving pleasure and a comprehensive luxury experience. Recently, I had the opportunity to take it out for some photos and while the weather might not have played ball, I think it’s fair to say that it matched the vibe of the Cayenne perfectly.

An updated interior, driver-focused.

The redesign of the Cayenne’s interior centres around enhancing the driver’s interaction with the vehicle. Borrowing from the Porsche Taycan, the Cayenne now features a fully digital 12.6-inch instrument cluster, providing a sleek, driver-focused interface. This setup is easily personalised to display whatever driving metrics you prefer, ensuring clarity and ease of use. After stepping back into the car from a photoshoot in the torrential rain, the warmth of the heated and ventilated leather seats was immediately comforting. The four-zone climate control system was incredibly efficient, integrated with a new air quality setup, filtering out pollutants and adjusting air recirculation automatically, which I found to be extremely good compared to other vehicles in a similar market.

Having spent a few years in the automotive industry, I’ve gained an elevated opinion of the Porsche brand. As with many others, you expect expert craftsmanship and a high level of build quality, synonymous with the name. But, there’s something different about sitting in the cockpit and experiencing it for yourself. Running your hands along the leather, tactile interior buttons, and luxurious steering wheel, you gain a true understanding of the vehicle and a connection unlike anything else. Some additional extras added, that I particularly liked, were the GT Sport Steering wheel, Carbon interior package, Sport Chrono package, and the Panoramic Glass Sunroof.

After all, if the majority of your time is spent inside the vehicle, shouldn’t it be the most important part? Clearly, Porsche would agree.

V8 twin-turbo? Sounds good to me.

Honestly, one of the most impressive parts for me was the performance. Hearing the crackle and pop of the boisterous V8 twin-turbo engine in Sport Plus mode, felt nostalgic. An SUV has no right to sound that good. But, with 368kW and 660Nm of Torque, propelling it to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds, it’s no surprise. If that somehow isn’t enough for you, the Cayenne Turbo GT takes that up another level, but that deserves its own article. For the majority of owners, the GTS is a highly capable SUV more than enough for every day driving.

The Cayenne GTS’s ride quality is completed by its suspension system. Featuring steel spring suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and new shock absorbers in base models, the GTS variant includes an adaptive air suspension with 2-chamber, 2-valve technology. This setup ensures the ride is smooth, yet dynamic, and you can tell. Even driving the windy and bumpy Summit Road, it was smooth. Switching between Normal, Sport, and Sport Plus modes, distinctly alters the driving dynamics, adapting the vehicle to any road condition with precision.

Updates to the exterior, as if it couldn’t get any better.

The exterior of the Cayenne has always been beautiful, but this new model really brings the heat. Up front, it’s got an aggressive grill with wider wings that give it a broader stance, and sharp, distinctive Matrix LED headlights. These are something Porsche has spent a significant amount of R&D developing over the last few years. The optional HD Matrix LEDs now contain two high-definition modules, hosting more than 32,000 pixels per headlamp, providing unparalleled high beam control to avoid dazzling other drivers. The system has over 1,000 adjustable brightness levels, ensuring optimal lighting in all driving conditions.

Moving towards the back, the rear has been restructured with the three-dimensional LED light bar as a clear focused design element, as well as the incorporation of the number plate holder, showcasing the attention to detail Porsche is known for. Along with this stunning redesign, Porsche now offers the Cayenne in three different wheel sizes. From 20-inch to 22-inch, you can choose the wheel that fits your vehicle best. This Cayenne is currently sitting on 22-inch 911 turbo-design wheels, which I feel perfectly compliment the Quarzite Grey Metallic paint.

Closing thoughts: Luxury SUVs redefined.

Driving the Cayenne GTS reshaped my understanding of luxury SUVs. Porsche has masterfully combined performance, technology, and design, ensuring that the thrill of driving remains central. Each feature is thoughtfully integrated, making the Cayenne GTS not just a vehicle but a companion on your journeys.
