Electrifying the Taycan

Porsche excels at setting new standards in the automotive industry, and now in 2024 with the introduction of the Porsche EV Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo a new blend of EV efficiency and classic internal combustion engine performance has been reached. Prepare for the arrival of these groundbreaking vehicles and explore the key details you need to know because as Chris Harris from Top Gear was quoted to say when test driving the Taycan, “you put your foot down and you’re in another dimension”, so, we all better be ready.

Performance

With performance optimized for a unique driving experience, the latest Taycan boasts an enhanced performance, with power ranging from 20 to 110 kW* higher than its 2020 counterpart. Moreover, the Taycan Turbo S now delivers an impressive 570 kW, pushing the boundaries of exhilaration.

Overall performance is directly affected by acceleration capability, and the Taycan and Taycan crossed Turismo from Porsche have increased torque from its predecessor. Now being able to reach 410 Nm, this guarantees a swifter acceleration from standstill and ability to maintain higher speeds with more ease.

Range

As range is one of the primary attractors when choosing an electric car, you’ll be eager to hear that the new Taycan can travel up to 678 km (WLTP), due to improvements in battery capacity, in the thermal management, energy recovery and powertrain.

With a smarter thermal management system, the new Taycan can maintain its motor within the ideal temperature range. This helps overall to improve efficiency, contributing to extending the vehicles’ range by conserving its energy.

Recuperation

In the new Taycan, the recuperation strategy has been enhanced to extend driving range and overall energy efficiency. The maximum deceleration now, generated by recuperation in the lower speed range has been increased by around 15 percent, and the maximum recuperation power has been increased to up to 400 kW.

Racing to the Front

Porsche wouldn’t be a Porsche if it didn’t stand out in the racing and sports car world, and although many are skeptical that an EV can cross these borders, the new Taycan is already proving them wrong.  With a new electric motor on the rear axle, which is around 10kg lighter, it makes the new Taycan’s sports and race car potential even more apparent. The new Taycan’s rotor has a new rotor shaft, new balancing discs and a more efficient, segmented magnet arrangement to reduce losses in the magnetic fields.

With both the software and hardware having been enhanced, the Taycan now has more efficient control and power supply of the electric machines via the two pulse inverters. This gives the Taycan an adapted gearshift and all-wheel drive strategy**.

Breathtaking Acceleration

We have already touched on acceleration, but instead of just talking about it, let’s see some stats:

  • The new Taycan with performance battery plus now moving from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds whereas the predecessor took 5.4 seconds.
  • The new Taycan 4S with performance battery plus now shifting from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds with the predecessor taking 4.0 seconds.
  • The new Taycan Turbo with performance battery plus now climbing  from 0-100 km/h in 2.7 seconds, whereas the predecessor took 3.2 seconds.
  • The new Taycan Turbo S with performance battery plus now propelling itself from 0-100 km/h in 2.5 seconds, with their predecessor taking 2.8 seconds.

Finer Details

Internally, the new Taycan has ample technology. Offering superior control and display, the instrument cluster, central display and optional passenger display feature a fine-tuned user interface with additional functions. The mode switch on the steering wheel, now coming as a new standard, means you can easily choose how to drive on any given day, depending on how you feel.

Infotainment

Connectivity is key in the twenty-first century, with a 16.8-inch display for the gauges and two centrally located touchscreens that control the all-important infotainment system. This allows drivers and passengers to adjust climate settings, check battery status, input navigation details, interact with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features, as well as open and close the boots and charge ports.

Charging Up

The new Taycan has now been unleashed with the power to recharge faster at home, or on the road than ever before. It can charge at 800-volt DC charging stations at up to 320 kW under ideal conditions. This is 50 kW more than the previous model. Not only that, but the fast-charging window of the new performance battery has been significantly expanded, meaning higher charging capacities can be sustained for longer periods of time, even at lower temperatures. Under ideal conditions, the updated Taycan takes just 18 minutes despite its larger battery capacity.

With the My Porsche app, you can easily take control of the charging process, check the state of the charge of your battery or bring your all-electric Porsche to a comfortable temperature before you start your trip.
