The 2025 Archibalds Defender Off-Road Experience
We recently hosted our first, exclusive Defender off-road experience. The Defender is a legend in its own right, and New Zealand is truly a Defender country. The Defender was born to endure and survive the harshest of conditions, its inbuilt advanced suspension system, terrain response mode, and strong underbody protection let it handle just about anything Mother Nature throws at it.

Guests of our business experienced the true capability of their Defender by traversing on, through and around the publicly unchartered terrain of Lake Coleridge Station. A true representation of the classic Canterbury high-country farm, Lake Coleridge Station was the perfect playground with rolling hills and valleys, lush vegetation, and dramatic rocky outcrops and crags – 100% pure Defender terrain.
It was an unparalleled experience unlike any other for everyone who experienced it.
The Arrival
The day began in West Melton. It was great to see all of the Defenders arrive one-by-one and meet guests with freshly made barista coffee. After a quick health & safety check-in we began the journey in convoy through the planes and into the hills, arriving at Lake Coleridge Station at around 10 am.
The Homestead
We were fortunate enough to secure the trained expertise of the internationally recognised Downforce crew, who helped us drive the day to perfection. The crew specialise in curating the ultimate experiential adventures for both private and corporate clients – offering a range of activities from track driving, SUV off-roading, and winter driving on snow and ice. Making sure to deliver the highest standard of automotive training.
Downforce was able to lay out the laws of the land for our customers, talking them through the plan of the day, the routes, and how their Defenders would deliver them smoothly to the finish line.
We setup base at the station’s original private homestead, which dates back to 1865. This provided our customers a unique glimpse into the area’s rich heritage and sparked early conversation about the history of the naturally formed landscape. Then, once all lined into Defender formation, it was full speed ahead.
The Defender Adventure
The beginning of our adventure saw all the Defenders plowing through the first river crossing, showcasing their impressive ability to wade through water up to 900 mm. While the river wasn’t flowing quite as we’d hoped, it was a perfect opportunity for our customers to experience the Defender’s exceptional water handling system firsthand.
However, it was after the river crossing that both the Defenders and their drivers were truly put to the test. True to form, the weather stuck to its reliably unpredictable nature, and we soon found ourselves facing a mix of rain and sleet while attempting to scale the highest peak of the trip. But instead of being deterred, our customers were even more eager to conquer the challenging terrain, embracing the conditions with enthusiasim and having much more fun than if dry.
From there, we convoyed up to the Red Lakes, admiring the fresh glazing of snow lining the mountainous backdrop. We were all eager to stretch our legs, and explore a bit by foot, but the weather was holding the reins at this point. Instead we pressed on rocking through the muddy ruts, and bumping along with every twist and turn of the rugged terrain.
In the world of off-roading, it was smooth sailing, until one Defender suddenly lost tyre pressure and required an urgent replacement. While this might sound like a setback, it turned out to be a highlight of many during the trip, allowing us all to take a pause, a breath of the crisp and clear mountain air, and really take in the magnificent landscape. And although instructed it would be better to stand aside while the experts (Downforce) worked their magic on the tyre, all the customers gathered around, eager to pitch in, help, and learn a bit. It was a defining point of the day where a camaraderie of Defender fans was firmly established.
“When the weather started turning and the rain came in, Charles and I started smiling because we decided to put the mud terrain tyres on the day before. As a result we had amazing grip all day, that was until we blew out our front left tyre in the ruts. The Downforce guys got stuck in and did the muddy wheel change while the drivers got together for a bit of banter. What a beautiful station.” – Axel
The remainder of the trek took the guests around and over the turnip-sewn paddocks, winding through hills pointing towards the direction of the lake. Eventually, the distant baaing of the land’s inhabitants saw the last gear shift for our first Defender Off-road Experience, signaling our customers back to the homestead.
Defender Hospitality
As the convoy approached the homestead, they were greeted by Archibalds Defender hospitality. A marquee and an old Bedford truck that had been converted into a woodfire pizza oven.
Customers eagerly grabbed a plate, tucking into the warming wood-smoked pizza. The margarita pizza, topped generously, was a crowd favourite while the mushroom and feta combination brought the flavours from Greece, and of course the pièce de résistance – a classic Kiwi lamb pizza. Having built solid friendships throughout the day, guests effortlessly regrouped to enjoy lunch.
