What is Audi pre sense and how does it increase driver safety?
Audi pre sense is an advanced suite of safety technologies that are designed to help prevent accidents and protect occupants in the event of a collision.
Using a variety of sensors, including radars and cameras, your Audi is consistently monitoring the road ahead and behind to ensure your safety while driving. Audi pre sense comes in 3 different variants – pre-sense front, pre sense back, and pre sense plus.
How does Audi pre sense work?
Before we dive into how pre sense works, it’s important to understand the distinctions between its various versions.
Pre sense basic
The standard version of Audi pre sense is called pre sense basic. This version uses the vehicle’s ESP sensors to detect when the vehicle suddenly brakes or skids and the control unit intervenes. Depending on the situation, it activates the hazard warning lights and begins closing all windows and the sunroof. The vehicle also tensions pneumatic springs and the seat belts of the front seats. This tensioning process, which is reversible, is triggered by small electric motors and is released if an accident does not occur.
Pre sense front
Audi pre sense front is another variant designed to detect collisions in front of the vehicle and provides differing levels of support for the driver depending on the situation. The first is just a warning signal, appearing on the dash with an audible noise to alert the driver, followed by a secondary warning jerk caused by brief braking by the car. If the driver takes action and places their foot on the brake, the vehicle’s brake assist initiates deceleration. Should the driver remain passive, the third stage of avoidance occurs – partial braking. The vehicle takes immediate action and is slowed down with roughly one-third of brake pedal force. Finally, the windows and sunroof begin to close, the hazard warning lights are activated, and the seatbelts are tensioned.
Pre sense rear
Using the vehicle’s rear sensors, the Audi pre sense rear system mitigates the consequences of a rear-end collision. Here too, it closes the windows and sunroof while simultaneously tensioning the seat belts. If the optional front memory seats are on board, they too move into a better position in the event of an impact.
Pre sense plus
Finally, with the full version, Audi pre sense plus, a fourth stage of avoidance comes into play. If all other options have been used, another round of partial braking will take place – this time at a moderate level – followed by maximum braking, during which the seatbelts are pulled fully taut. This occurs around half a second before impact, at which point a collision can no longer be avoided. Pre sense plus helps reduce overall vehicle speed by up to 40 km/h before a crash, mitigating larger consequences of an accident.
What are the benefits of Audi pre sense?
Now that we’ve covered how Audi pre sense works, let’s take a look at the benefits that it provides you as a driver:
Reduced risk of accidents
Sometimes despite our best efforts, accidents can be unavoidable. With Audi pre sense, the chances of an accident are significantly reduced by detecting potential collisions and taking the correct steps to avoid or mitigate the impact.
Reduced severity of accidents
Despite all of the measures put in place to prevent accidents, there are still times when it is too late to be avoided. By pre-tensioning seatbelts, closing the windows and sunroof, and emergency braking, the chances of a major accident are reduced dramatically, making your journey much safer regardless of where you go.
Increased safety for occupants
Audi pre sense can help to increase the safety of occupants by keeping them in place during a collision and reducing the severity of the impact.
What Audi models have pre sense?
Pre sense is standard on most Audi models, but it may be an optional feature on some models. If you are interested in purchasing an Audi with pre sense, be sure to check with our team to see if it is available on the model you are interested in.
