With such an extensive vehicle lineup, Audi’s model names and terminology can initially be overwhelming and seem like random numbers and letters. However, once deciphered, these names reveal the key elements that make up your Audi. Each part of the name indicates specific features such as the model’s position in the lineup, engine type, and performance characteristics. Understanding this naming system allows you to better appreciate the design and engineering that go into every Audi vehicle. What the Audi letters mean
Audi’s lettering system is relatively straightforward, with the letters representing vehicle type and performance. ‘A’ denotes standard base models typically sedans, hatchbacks, and station wagons. The letter ‘Q’ is used for SUVs, and ‘E’ is designated for electric vehicles. Additionally, ‘S’ signifies sportier versions, and ‘RS’ represents the highest performance variants. This systematic approach helps you easily identify the specific type and performance level of each Audi vehicle.
What the Audi numbers mean
Following the model letter is a number, which typically represents the vehicle’s size and position within the lineup. The smaller the number, the smaller and more compact the vehicle, while larger numbers indicate bigger and often more luxurious models. For example, the Audi Q2 is a compact SUV, whereas the Audi Q8 is a larger, more luxurious SUV.
Q = SUV 5 = mid-size
Audi Power Badge
Another number often included in an Audi model name is the ‘power badge’ which is a number that is followed by combustion type, either TFSI, TDI and now e-tron. The numbering starts at 30 and increases in increments of 5. It represents the vehicles output of their powertrain — in layman terms, the bigger the number, the more powerful the engine. However, the numbers don’t reference the car’s exact power, but the output range within which it sits:
- 30: 109-128 hp (81-96 kW)
- 35: 147-160 hp (110-120 kW)
- 40: 167-201 hp (125-150 kW)
- 45: 226-248 hp (169-185 kW)
- 50: 281-308 hp (210-230 kW)
- 55: 328-368 hp (245-275 kW)
- 60: 429-455 hp (320-340 kW)
- 70: 536+ hp (400+ kW)
Fuel designation
As mentioned above, following the power range number, is the combustion type. So, if it says TFSI that means it’s a petrol, while TDI equates to a diesel engine. If you’re looking for a plug-in hybrid it will be badged as a ‘TFSI e’, while all-electric models are labelled as ‘e-tron’.
- TSFI: Turbo Fuel Stratified Injection (petrol) TSFI e: Hybrid
- TDI: Turbocharged Direct Injection (diesel) TDI e: Hybrid
- e-tron: Fully electric
50 = power output: 281-308 hp (210-230 kW) TDI= Turbocharged Direct Injection (diesel) quattro= All-wheel drive
