Defender x Mapu: Harvest in the Wild
After a clear and sunny day, the previous day clouds rolled in and fog settled over Christchurch like a soft blanket. Yet even that couldn’t take away from the experience Archibalds Defender and local Lyttelton restaurant Mapu had prepared for a select group of our Defender customers. Read on to discover the journey that unfolded.
Upon Arrival
Welcomed into our temporary residence at 208 Montreal Street, customers stepped into the showroom at 10:30 am, armed with jackets, bags, and even a few sporting Red Band gumboots, ready for a day of unexpected activities.
After registration, check-in, and pairing their mobile phones with the iconic Land Rover Pivi Pro infotainment system, guests made their way to their designated new Defender MY26s where they scanned custom QR codes to reveal their mapped route to Magnet Bay.
Convoying Out
Driving out and up in a convoy, the first stop was the 1941-built Sign of the Bellbird. Guests had the chance to switch drivers (so everyone got a turn!), stretch their legs, and embark on their first excursion into foraging in the wild. First up on the list of ingredients: wild blackberries, mānuka, harakeke (flax seed), dandelions, Coprosma berries, field mushrooms, and potatoes.
As well as gathering what they could of nature’s wild abundance, Mapu served a light refreshment and selection of snacks, before everyone loaded back into their Defender to continue the road along.
Magnet Bay
Upon arrival, all Defenders parked along Magnet Bay, and guests ambled down to the beach to discover what natural treasures awaited them. This time on the list was sea asparagus, iceplant, sheep sorrel, and wild watercress.
Lunch was served on the sandy shores where guests mixed and mingled, enjoying conversations inspired by life of Mapu owner and chef Giulio Sturla, and connecting with our Defender special guest, Scott Robertson.
On Return
Before we knew it, the hours had slipped away with the tide, and it was time to head back to the civilisation of our Defender showroom. On arrival, guests were greeted by a display of wild plants atop rustic, wooden wine barrels, accompanied by the soulful acoustic voice of local performer Marcel. Awaiting them was a selection of Mapu’s signature delicacies, perfectly paired with local wines.
The afternoon drifted comfortably into the early evening before guests started to make their way home, contentedly tired after an adventurous Defender Day out.
